I've always been self-taught, sort of like the Grandma Moses of acting. If I'd gone to drama school, I would probably have had a very different career- perhaps not as much fun in some ways.

I felt that civil discourse in America was breaking down, with people splitting into two warring ideological camps. Meanwhile, the real issues we face are far more subtle, nuanced, and complex. I believed society needed what I call a contempt-free zone.

My entry into this space came in 2019 when I read a paper by Demis Hassabis of DeepMind advocating for machine learning and AI researchers to go back to their roots in neuroscience. I took that literally — I went back to the neuroscience department at my alma mater, the University of Melbourne, and asked what was exciting them.

I was at one of our schools in Kenya recently, I was just chatting away to a group of children about all the things we had seen that day- the lions and how lucky they are to be sitting next to Meru National Park, and I said 'would anyone like to ask me a question?'. Suddenly this little boy put up his hand and he said 'please miss, why do men kill lions?'. Well, I could have hugged him if he wouldn't have been mortified with embarrassment.

Typically, when you ask a business person about their progress, their immediate response tends to revolve around growth figures – 'We're 20% up from last year' – under the assumption that growth equates to robustness and sustainability. However, empirical evidence doesn't support this assumption.
