Society must demand that you comport yourself within a framework of rules. Once those rules break, society breaks down.

There's a very strong relationship between depravation and drug use in many western cultures. It's not the sole reason- you do get the rich and mega-privileged using drugs… You can't go shouting from the rooftops that it's all about depravation… a lot of it is… but there are other social factors, personal factors, genetic factors and economic factors – all mixed into the pot.

It made me realize that someone has to initiate change. While it's not a single person's job, someone needs to make a start. I firmly believe that beyond a certain point, money should serve society.

So many of us think that we don't have power as individuals; and that makes us unwittingly complicit. When you take a step back and view this from a 30,000-foot perspective, I try to highlight the role of civilians in conflict. Officials, especially those in power controlling militaries or governments, often want to shape the narrative, to spin you to their story. But when you speak to civilians in the midst of war, they share more about the personal impact on their lives, and I think my audience and readers can connect more deeply with those voices.
