Mind, body, and spirit have to come together, and I think when you have early trauma that gets disrupted, your mind gets separated from your body. Your mind becomes this sort of distracted, dissociated place to go when this alarm in your body—if your parents are screaming at each other or your dad's an alcoholic—there's only so much a child can take.
Though I'm not a politician or involved in politics, I found myself deeply entrenched in the political world because decisions about our bodies aren't made in clinics or doctor's offices. They're made in Westminster. When you step into those corridors of power, it's astonishing to witness the detachment many decision-makers have from real-life issues.

We can become resilient however, and learn to have peace of mind, even when we experience traumatic events. We can learn to have stable peace of mind... happiness? Maybe not. It's unhelpful to say to someone, 'do these 10 things to be happy' – there are things you can do to get peace of mind, increase your probability of happiness, and your probability of having successful relationships.
I want to set an example for this generation of war reporters, and for my generation as a whole, that you don't have to rely on drugs or alcohol to cope with traumatic experiences. Cold exposure, like an ice bath or cold shower, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, getting outside for a walk in the sun—ideally, a combination of all these things—can make a huge difference. You'd be surprised how your brain starts to adjust after just a few days, making you feel lighter, healthier, and more capable of handling whatever life throws at you.
Roughly 100 countries in the world have already eliminated malaria (most of them since the Second World War). Of the 100 countries in the world that still have endemic malaria, 39 are in the process of eliminating while the remaining 61 are making steady progress.
I define robustness as saying that we're fit for purpose, 'I'm sat in my house in the morning, I'm in a great place, I'm robust and ready to face the world and deal with any emotions my brain throws up' It's having a plan and being ready. Once I open the door and life happens to me, I've got to say robust, that's resilience. Robustness is being in a good place and having a plan, resilience is being able to implement that plan and stay in a good place.
